High School to go on College Day this Friday Oct. 17th

Our 9th-12th grade students will take our annual sojourn to visit some college campuses. This year we will visit schools in the 5-college area: Amherst, Smith, Hampshire, and UMass. We believe it is beneficial for students of all grade levels to start learning about college options and start imagining futures that include continuing education. Students have signed up for either Hampshire, Smith, or Amherst in the morning, and then we will all meet at UMass after lunch.  Students may bring their own bag lunch, or they may eat at the college cafeteria for a small fee. (Hampshire and Amherst charge $4 for lunch; Smith has an a la carte café available-probably $5-7.) Students need to arrive at school at 8:00am. We will be back at Compass at 4:00pm. We can make a pick-up at the Exit 1 Outlet Center in Brattleboro at 8:30am and a drop off at 3:30pm. Please alert the office ahead of time if you would like us to pick you up at the Outlet Center.

Middle School NECAP tests rescheduled-

We plan to give the state NECAP tests to the 7th and 8th grade students on Friday October 17th. This is a day when the high school will be out of the building at college day, and thus an ideal day to quietly focus on these tests. Additional time will be used the following week to wrap up the testing as necessary. Note: for 7th and 8th grade students, the school day for this Friday is on the normal schedule: 8:30am-2:10pm.

Schedule Note: No school on Thursday Oct. 23 and Friday Oct. 24 due to the statewide teacher inservice days.

Soccer News- A quick update for all you Middle School (grades 7-9 for soccer) team parents:

·       We have a game this Thursday at Winchester school in New Hampshire. We will leave Compass at 2:30pm and play in Winchester (south of Keene) from 3:30pm to about 5:00pm.  We will return to Compass around 6pm. Please plan to pick your kids up at Compass at that time or arrange with me any other transportation.

·       Next Monday we will have a home game against Halifax (a first for Compass!).  Many of the players will be visiting Compass School during the day and after school we will all go over to the Institute field in Westminster for a game beginning around 3:30pm. Please let me know if you are unable, for any reason to have your child at the game or if you have any specific transportation needs.

All my best, Bruce

Thanks!

  • To everyone who supported the Compass burrito booth on Sunday at the Harvest Festival. We earned over $2000 to support the Mexico expedition! And special thanks to Andy Winter for leading the effort.

CRT Bus needs support!

Many of you ride the CRT bus route between Brattleboro and Bellows Falls. This route is largely supported by federal grants but also relies on rider contributions. Last year the route fell $36,000 short of the funds needed to cover the costs of supplying this service. We urge riders and families to contribute toward your use of this great resource. Riders can contribute on a per-ride basis on the bus, or you may send checks to Connecticut River Transit, POB 68, Springfield, VT 05156.  www.crtransit.org

 Forest of Mystery

Forest of Mystery, the Bonnyvale Environmental Center's theater in the woods event, is going to be performing a tale adapted from Nordic mythology on October 24th and 25th.  There are many interesting parts available.  For some parts all that is required is to show up on the day of the performance, for others there will be rehearsals.  Come join us in creating a fabulous event!
