Our Adventures in North Carolina

North Carolina-

1/29/10 Janet and I are here at school 4ish on Friday. I think all the other teachers have left. I finished making identification cards... well I finished the first step and she said, "Good now you can start our blog." So here I am testing to see how easy it will be to add our adventure to the mighty Compass Web site.

Travel

Best of luck as you fly through the night in the early hours; please keep us  posted (pictures?) of all your accomplishments.  We are proud of you.

Day 1 and 2

Louise here- So sorry we missed you all yesterday. Sara Lepkoff wrote a very thoughtful entry then we couldn't get on line. I think the high light of our day of travel was our lay over in Tampa... yes Tampa, Florida... The pilots let the kids sit in the pilot seat and they took some great pictures.

Wednesday 2/3/10 - After we got off the ferry, that took us to "Bald Head Island" we took a short drive (via golf cart) to the island Conservancy. There Dr. Tom Hancock educated us in how the island was changing and the envirornment with it. The plant life, that would hold the earth together, is being uprooted to for houses that are being built to compensate for the growing population of "Bald Head Island". After the lecture we were allowed to look at the exhibits of some of the reptiles that lived on the island. We got to hold two Yellow Bellied Sliders tirtles, a Corn Snake, and a Green Snake. On the Conservancy we cleared brush, cleaned up trash, or cleaned most of  the animal tanks. After our day's work, we spent a nice calming time on the beach: splashing each other with cold ocean watrer, collecting shells and sand dollars, and taking walks and talking with our peers. It was a fun, imformative, and exciting day and many thanks to our hosts, Dr. Tom Hancock and Maureen DeWire.

Day 3

Today we woke up and headed off the aquarium. Inside we saw one of the few existing albino alligators, and hunted for shark’s teeth in the fossil hunt. We went to a civil war museum honoring the battle of Fort Fisher and saw a movie talking about the fight. Back home we started to get ready to help with Curbside café, which is a organization that helps feed the homeless. We cooked the food, and then spent an hour and a half feeding people in need.  - Jake
