Junior Seminar
Here are your reading requirements:
INDEPENDENT READING
JUNIOR SEMINAR
Spring 2010
GUIDELINES:
☼You will be expected to read on your own in the next month, even though we are not reading a book as a class. You may choose what book(s) you read as long as you get your coach’s approval, and this means that we see it as an appropriate reading level for you.
☼Even though we highly encourage you to read something you will enjoy, we also highly encourage you to take this opportunity to read a book that you wouldn’t normally choose, to challenge yourself, and to read something that many other high school students will have read by the time they get to college.
☼Today, you will get the opportunity to visit the vastly stocked Toadstool bookstore in Keene in order to choose a book. Here are the guidelines for that choice:
- Price must not exceed $16.00 (go for paperback)
- Must be high school or above reading level
- Must be at least 200 pages
- Must be fiction or nonfiction (autobiography, memoir, history)—no graphic novels, how-to, picture, or self-help books.
- You are asked to donate the book to the Compass library after you have read it. You will be charged for the book if you lose it (oops).
REQUIREMENTS:
1) Set a reading goal with your coach: this might be to read a certain book, several books, or a certain number of pages
NOTE: You MUST get approval for your goal, so write down your proposed idea on the attached contract and hand that in by Friday, 4/30
2) Read regularly to reach that goal. This is considered nightly homework, at the very least.
3) Pass the in–class written exam to be administered during final exam days
4) Meet Due Dates
- Book and goal approved by Friday, 4/30 (see contract on next page)
- Reach (or exceed) individual goal by Wednesday, 5/26
- In-class exam, Thursday, 5/27 or Friday, 5/28
Outstanding Option: Set a particularly challenging goal for yourself and meet it. Read War and Peace (in Russian), for example J
SIGN AND HAND IN BY THIS FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
