Our Adventures in North Carolina

North Carolina-

1/29/10 Janet and I are here at school 4ish on Friday. I think all the other teachers have left. I finished making identification cards... well I finished the first step and she said, "Good now you can start our blog." So here I am testing to see how easy it will be to add our adventure to the mighty Compass Web site.

Junior Trip to Ecuador

I watched the Compass School junior class start their packing for the trip to Ecuador, they leave on Thursday.  Nervous laughter filled the big room as each student checked the list, laid out t-shirts, socks, then folded and packed into their backpacks or luggage.  All are excited about the trip but still are nervous about traveling into a new country; "how will I be viewed", "will my Spanish be good or will people laugh at me", "what changes will occur while I am gone", "what kind of person will I be when I get back"?

Friday update

Blogging today in order to get myself in the habit of consistently doing it. Just a post! No more no less.

Junior Class Headed to Ecuador

For the first two weeks in February, the whole 11th grade class from Compass School will travel to Ecuador for a week of cultural immersion, service, and direct experience with issues of social justice. Having studied a variety of issues around economic development, immigration, relations between indigenous populations and colonial powers, and the effects of globalization on individual lives, the 17 students in this class are ready to learn about these issues first hand.

1960’s Living History Museum at Compass School, Tuesday, January 26th

The 9/10th grade Compass School Humanities classes will be presenting a Living Museum of the 1960's on January 26th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Compass School on Route 5 just south of Bellows Falls. All are invited to this culminating event of the students’ in-depth study of this decade.  Come relive these exciting times with exhibits, music, costumed characters, food, and maybe even a small protest or sit-in to keep things lively.

Middle School Exchange

For several years, we had a wonderful partnership with ConneXions Community Leadership Academy, an inner city charter school in Baltimore. Our middle school students went down there for a week living with families in the city, and we hosted a group of their students up here for a week of life in Vermont. This was a powerful experience for everyone involved (see student poetry journal).
