10th Year Anniversary Bash

For an informal but high spirited celebration of the school's 10th year, a couple hundred "Friends of Compass" showed up to share stories and reconnect. It was great to see the mix of alumni, current students, parents, founding and current board members, and a variety of friends who have been part of Compass' continued evolution and growth. Cher Anderson, our revered school chef, provided a sumptuous feast of fresh salsa and chips, organic salad, and barbeque chicken and tempeh and hot dogs.

The Science of Tears

Spring 2009, Beth White

As I peer under the microscope of life
I look closely at the
perfect droplet that
slid across cheek
onto slide.

Distracted, I smile
remembering a two-hour car ride
Meghan and Kristi
entertaining me with
music,
stories,
laughing.

I adjust the diaphragm of light and marvel at
the phenomenon of this perfect union of
Na and Cl,

Sitting in the cold library basement, surrounded by books I realize how ridiculous this is.
I eat my lunch down here.
I hate it down here.
But if I go up there, I am surrounded by pale faces peering into me like rabid dogs. 
Their beady eyes scan me and make me oh so vulnerable to their next moves,
The next attack is the worst of all.
It's when they walk by you like you don't exist,
